Teething can start as early as 3 months and typically peaks around 6-12 months when the front four teeth come in, followed by the first molars at 12-16 months. The right teether depends on the baby's age, gum sensitivity, and which soothing mechanism works for them — every baby has preferences that parents discover through trial and observation.

Teether Materials: Natural Rubber, Silicone, and Plastic

Natural rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) is the oldest teether material and remains popular with parents who prefer non-synthetic options. Natural rubber has a distinct feel that differs from silicone — slightly more yielding, with a natural organic smell. It is appropriate for chewing and safe if ingested in small amounts from wear. The primary consideration: some children have latex allergies, and natural rubber contains latex proteins. Silicone is the most common modern teether material. It is BPA-free, dishwasher-safe, does not harbor bacteria in the way natural materials can, and comes in an enormous range of softness levels. Food-grade silicone is completely safe for babies. The feel ranges from very soft (Comotomo) to firmer ring styles depending on the product. Hard plastic: Older-style ring teethers use hard plastic. These are less recommended by pediatric dentists because the rigid surface cannot conform to gum shape — the baby gets pressure only at contact points rather than across the gum surface.

Cold is one of the most effective teething pain relief mechanisms — it temporarily numbs gum tissue and reduces inflammation. Teethers designed for refrigerator chilling (Nuby IcyBite and similar) take advantage of this. The critical rule: refrigerate, never freeze. Frozen teethers harden to a point where they can injure already-inflamed gum tissue.

Room-temperature teethers provide pressure and texture relief without temperature, which is appropriate for mild teething discomfort and daily chewing practice. Having one chilled teether for acute pain episodes and one room-temperature teether for daily use is the practical approach.

Teethers go directly into babies' mouths continuously throughout the day. Clean them:

• After each use if the baby is sick or if the teether touches a surface
• At minimum daily for active daily use
• According to material: Silicone teethers can go in the dishwasher top rack. Natural rubber should be hand-washed with mild soap — dishwasher heat can degrade rubber. Hard plastic varies by product.

Inspect teethers regularly for biting damage. A cracked or split teether can shed pieces that become a choking hazard — replace when damage is visible.

Teethers can be introduced from about 3 months when babies begin putting everything in their mouths. At 3 months, babies do not yet have coordinated grip — choose teethers that can be held by a young infant with minimal grip precision (the Sophie la Girafe's legs and body work well for this). By 5-6 months, fine motor development allows babies to direct a teether to specific gum locations.

• Teething gels with benzocaine: can cause a rare but serious blood condition (methemoglobinemia) in infants under 2 years
• Teething necklaces and bracelets: strangulation and choking risk
• Amber teething necklaces: no evidence of effectiveness, documented injury risk
• Frozen teethers: too hard when frozen, can damage gum tissue

Simple teethers and chilled (not frozen) teethers remain the safest and most effective option.
