The Basic Cuts: What Each Silhouette Actually Means

Men's jeans have accumulated decades of confusing terminology. Here's what the standard cuts actually mean for how they fit:

Straight fit (505, Wrangler Regular): Consistent width from hip to ankle. The leg is the same measurement at the thigh and at the hem — it doesn't taper down. This is the most versatile and classic cut. Works with almost any shoe. Not tight, not wide. The default jean.

Slim straight: Straight from hip to ankle but with less width throughout — closer to the thigh and calf than a regular straight. More modern look. Not to be confused with skinny.

Relaxed/loose fit: More room in the seat, thigh, and throughout the leg. More comfortable for large thighs or anyone who values movement over silhouette. Often reads as casual or retro.

501 (button fly, straight): Levi's original 1873 design. Slightly different proportions than the 505 — the 501 has a higher rise and fuller thigh before straightening. The button fly is a design feature, not just a quirk. Beloved by people who want authentic vintage proportions.

Rise: The Measurement Nobody Talks About Enough

Rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. It determines where the waistband sits and how much room you have in the seat and thigh.

Low rise (7–8 inches): Sits below the hip. Can expose the lower back when bending. Largely fell out of fashion for men after the early 2000s.

Mid rise (9–11 inches): The current standard for most men's jeans. Sits at the natural waist or just below. Comfortable for all-day wear.

Flex denim adds 1–3% elastane to the cotton. It has give from the first moment you put it on. It's immediately comfortable without a break-in period. It recovers its shape when you take it off. The trade-off: flex denim doesn't develop the same character and fade lines as pure cotton over time — it stays more uniform.

For everyday wear and work: flex denim is more practical. For jeans you want to wear for 10 years and develop a worn-in character: pure cotton.

Denim weight is measured in ounces per square yard (oz). Standard everyday jeans are 11–13 oz. What this affects:

• Durability: Heavier denim (13+ oz) lasts longer and fades more dramatically over time. The classic Levi's 501 was originally made at 14 oz.
• Feel: Lighter denim (under 11 oz) drapes softly but wears through faster. Flex jeans are typically lighter weight to accommodate the stretch.
• Structure: Heavier denim holds its shape better and looks sharper when new. Lighter denim can look wrinkled by end of day.

Frequent washing accelerates fading and wears down fabric. Should jeans be tight when I first try them on? Slightly — new non-stretch jeans are stiff and will relax 5–10% after a few wears.
