How to File Taxes for Free Buying Guide

Over 70% of American taxpayers qualify to file their federal taxes completely free in 2026, yet most pay $50-150 to tax software companies for returns that qualify for free options. The gap exists because tax software companies have invested heavily in making paid tiers feel necessary, and the free options — while legitimate and IRS-backed — are less prominently advertised. Knowing which free option applies to your situation is the only research required.
IRS Free File: Free Federal Filing Under $84,000
IRS Free File is a partnership between the IRS and a consortium of tax software companies that requires each to offer free filing to taxpayers with Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $84,000 or under in 2026. Go directly to IRS.gov/freefile — never search for "free file" on a search engine, as paid ads from the same companies appear above the official IRS program and route you to paid products.
Each participating company has its own eligibility criteria beyond the income limit — some restrict by age, state, or return complexity. If one company's free product does not accept your return, try another. The IRS Free File Fillable Forms option (available for any income level) provides digital versions of paper tax forms with basic math assistance — it is not guided software, but it is free for all filers.
IRS Direct File: The Newest Free Option (2026)
IRS Direct File is the federal government's own free, guided tax filing software — no income limit for the basic product. In 2026, Direct File is available in 25+ states for taxpayers with straightforward situations: W-2 income, Social Security benefits, unemployment compensation, and standard deduction. Direct File does not support self-employment income, rental income, or itemized deductions in its current form.
Direct File's key advantage over Free File is that there is no upsell, no navigation to a paid tier, and no confusing income limits. If your return is a W-2 plus standard deduction, Direct File handles it completely. The interface is simpler than consumer software but walks through every field step by step. Available at directfile.irs.gov.
VITA: Free In-Person Filing for Complex Returns
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) provides free, IRS-certified tax preparation for taxpayers earning under $67,000, people with disabilities, and limited-English speakers. VITA sites are located at community centers, libraries, and schools — find the nearest site at IRS.gov/vita. VITA preparers are IRS-certified volunteers who can handle more complex returns than online free software, including Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and some self-employment situations.
VITA operates during tax season (typically January-April). If your situation is complex and your income qualifies, VITA is often better than attempting to navigate free DIY software that may not support your specific situation. There is no charge, and returns are reviewed for accuracy before submission. Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) is a similar free program specifically for taxpayers 60 and older, staffed by AARP volunteers at no cost regardless of income.
Free State Filing Options
Federal free filing does not automatically include state return filing — state returns typically cost $0-40 extra even when the federal is free. Several states (including California, Colorado, and Massachusetts) offer their own free state filing software independent of federal options. Check your state's revenue department website before paying for state filing through a commercial software company.
Some IRS Free File partner companies include free state filing for certain states as part of their free tier. Read the fine print carefully — "free" at the federal level often becomes "pay for state" at checkout. The IRS Free File program page lists which companies include free state filing and for which states.
When to Use Paid Tax Software
Paid software (TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxAct, FreeTaxUSA) is appropriate when your return includes self-employment income or business deductions, rental property income and depreciation, complex investment situations (options, crypto, wash sales), or foreign income and FBAR requirements. FreeTaxUSA charges $14.99 for state filing only and handles most complex returns, making it the best value among paid options for those who do not qualify for free programs.
