About This Guide

Under $400 in 2026 the honest answer is that most well-reviewed laptops now start around $600. If you are buying in this band anyway, the Acer Aspire 3 is the only Windows machine here that clears our memory, storage and processor floors; for browser-based work a Chromebook goes further, chosen by how long Google will still update it.

How we choose: Picks are compared on published manufacturer specifications, current prices, and Amazon customer ratings shown with their review counts. We do not test products ourselves and do not assign our own scores on this page. Learn about our research process | Last updated: August 2026

Laptops Under $400 Buying Guide

Best Laptops Under $400 2026: Windows & Chromebook PicksPhoto by Christina Morillo / Pexels

Under $400 in 2026 you are not buying a cheaper version of a good laptop. You are buying a plastic chassis, a dim screen, a webcam that will let you down on a video call, memory soldered in place, and a processor two or three classes below what a mid-priced machine carries. That is worth saying plainly, because every major guide we checked has quietly moved its main recommendation to around $600 and left this price band behind. If your budget can stretch that far, it is worth seeing what the extra money actually buys before you settle for less: our best laptops under $800 covers the band those recommendations moved into. If the purchase is specifically for coursework, best laptops for students spans this band and the ones above it in one place, so you can see the jump rather than guess at it. What is still achievable here is a machine that handles browsing, documents, email and video calls without frustration and keeps receiving security updates for years. Getting that depends on two things almost nobody prints: whether the listing is genuinely a new machine in stock, and how long its software support actually lasts.

How we picked

We do not run a testing laboratory, and we do not publish battery or brightness figures we did not measure. What we can do is verify the published facts that decide most of the value at this price. Every pick below was confirmed on its live retail listing as in stock and offered new, rather than as a used unit quietly holding the buy box. Its price was read from that live listing rather than from our own records. For each Chromebook, the software support end date was looked up on Google's official Auto Update policy list. Four machines were removed from this page for failing one of those checks, and they are named at the bottom with the reason, because a recommendation is worth about as much as the things it rejected.

Windows or ChromeOS: which track you are in

Choose ChromeOS if your work happens in a browser: documents in Google Docs or Office on the web, email, video calls, streaming, schoolwork. Chromebooks feel quicker than Windows machines at the same price because the system underneath is far lighter, and under $400 that is where the money goes furthest. Three of the four picks here are Chromebooks for exactly that reason.

Best Laptops for Students (2026 Ultimate Guide)
Best Laptops for Students (2026 Ultimate Guide)

Choose Windows if you need a specific Windows program that has no web version, or software your employer or school requires you to install. Only one Windows machine on this page clears the memory, storage and processor floors described below, which is itself a fair description of this price band.

One warning about a warning: the familiar advice to avoid Celeron processors is advice about Windows. ChromeOS asks far less of the hardware, so a Celeron that would make Windows 11 miserable can be perfectly pleasant in a Chromebook. Judge a Chromebook on its support date and its memory instead.

How long will it keep getting updates?

Every Chromebook has a published Auto Update Expiration date: the month Google stops issuing it security updates. The machine still switches on afterwards, but it stops being patched, and web apps gradually stop supporting it. Google publishes the date for every model, and the clock runs from the platform's release date rather than the day you buy it, so a model that has been on shelves for two years has already spent two years of its supported life.

The date is set per hardware variant, not per model name, and this is where money quietly gets wasted at this price. Google's own list shows four versions of the Acer Chromebook 314 — the same model name, in boxes a shopper cannot tell apart — whose security updates end in four different years: the CB314-1H in June 2029, the CB314-2H in June 2030, the CB314-3H in June 2031 and the CB314-4H in June 2033. Two of them can sit on the same shelf at the same price while one stops being safe to use four years before the other. The suffix that decides it is printed on the box, not on the shelf tag.

Lenovo IdeaPad 3i Chromebook 15.6-inchChromeOSNot confirmedCheck before buying

Dates above are taken from Google's published Auto Update policy list. We are not printing a date for the IdeaPad 3i because Google's list carries no entry under that exact name, and the nearest entry belongs to a differently specified model. Given that four variants of one Acer model line differ by four years, guessing from a similar name is not good enough. To check any machine yourself, open Settings on the Chromebook, then About ChromeOS, then Additional details, where the date is shown; or look the model up on Google's Auto Update policy list before you buy.

The Windows side of the same question is quieter but real. Windows 10 stopped receiving free security updates on 14 October 2025, with consumer extended updates running to 12 October 2027 — free if you sync your settings to a Microsoft account, or about $30 if not. Windows 11 keeps you supported only while you keep installing its annual feature updates, and those need roughly 20GB of free space to apply. That is why a 64GB drive on a Windows laptop is a support problem rather than merely a small one: Windows 11 itself occupies most of that drive, and the update that keeps it secure may not fit. The same 64GB in a Chromebook is not the same warning, because ChromeOS takes a fraction of the space.

Cost per supported year

The cheapest machine is not automatically the best value once support has an end date attached to it. A more useful comparison: take the price you actually pay and divide it by the years in the support column above. A Chromebook that costs half as much but expires in half the time is the same deal, not a better one, and a machine whose support has already lapsed is not a deal at any price. We deliberately do not freeze a cost-per-year figure beside each pick, because prices in this band moved by between 4 and 40 percent in the fortnight before this update and a printed figure would be wrong within days. The support dates do not move. Do the division against the price you see on the button.

“The Aspire 3 is the only Windows machine on this page that clears all three minimums in our guide: a quad-core Ryzen 3 7320U rather than a Celeron, 8GB of LPDDR5, and a real NVMe SSD rather than eMMC.”

The Aspire 3 pairs a Ryzen 3 7320U with 8GB of soldered LPDDR5 and a 128GB NVMe SSD on a 15.6-inch 1080p IPS panel. Notebookcheck's database rates that processor at 4,809 in Cinebench R23 multi-core - reasonable for the class, and roughly eight times what the Celeron N4020 fitted to many cheaper machines manages on the same benchmark. Independent battery results for this chassis disagree sharply depending on the test: Laptop Mag measured 6 hours 56 minutes of web browsing at 150 nits on the touchscreen sibling, while Consumer Reports recorded 11 hours on a faster Ryzen 5 version of the same machine, so no single figure is reliable and we do not print one. Laptop Mag also measured the panel at 223 nits and 68.3% sRGB and listed the display among the laptop's weaknesses. Graphics come from a Radeon 610M with just two compute units, which Notebookcheck notes is not really designed for gaming. The 128GB SSD is the smallest on this page and the memory cannot be upgraded, though the M.2 drive itself is user-replaceable. It ships in Windows 11 in S Mode and weighs 3.97 lb.

This is the entry point on the page, and it earns its place on a date rather than a spec sheet. Google's published Auto Update policy list carries this exact model string, CBO314-1H, with security updates running to June 2031 — roughly five years from now, on the cheapest machine here. That matters more than it sounds: a Chromebook that stops receiving updates is finished as a daily driver, and the support date is the one thing you cannot upgrade later. What you give up is memory and storage. 4GB of LPDDR4X is genuinely enough for the work this machine is for — a browser, mail, documents, video calls — and ChromeOS is light enough that the 64GB of eMMC is not the problem it would be on a Windows laptop. But 4GB is a ceiling you will meet, and you will meet it as sluggishness once you keep a dozen or more tabs open alongside a call. The panel is a full 1920x1080 rather than the 1366x768 that still haunts this price, which is the single specification most likely to make a cheap laptop feel cheap every day. Choose it if you want the least you can spend without buying a machine that expires soon. If you keep many tabs open, the 15.6-inch Lenovo on this page carries twice the memory for meaningfully more money; if you want the longest support runway instead, the 14-inch Lenovo Slim 3 runs two years further out. Skip it if you want a touchscreen or a convertible hinge — this one has neither.

If you intend to keep a cheap laptop until it stops being safe to use, this is the pick, and the reason is a published date rather than an opinion. Google's Auto Update policy list gives the Slim 3 Chromebook 14 line security updates to June 2033 — about seven years from now, and the furthest out of anything on this page. Worth being precise about the name, because Lenovo makes this confusing: the Slim 3 is the MediaTek version and the Slim 3i is the Intel one, they are different machines, and reviews of one do not describe the other. The eight-core MediaTek Kompanio 520 is a phone-class processor and behaves like one: quick enough on a handful of tabs and a video call, and it is the memory rather than the processor that will frustrate you first. 4GB is the same ceiling the cheaper Gateway has, so paying more here does not buy you headroom — it buys two additional years of updates and a touchscreen. Lenovo's own listing concedes the machine slows with many heavy tabs open, and the display is not intended for colour-critical work. Choose it if longevity is what you are buying and your workload is genuinely light. If you want more memory instead of more years, the 15.6-inch Lenovo on this page is the only 8GB Chromebook here — though its support date is unconfirmed, which is precisely the trade you would be making.

This is the most comfortable machine on the page to actually work on, and the one with the loosest thread. 8GB of memory is double what either 14-inch Chromebook here carries, and on ChromeOS that is the difference between a laptop that slows down when you open a lot of tabs and one that does not. The 15.6-inch 1920x1080 screen is the largest here, which suits spreadsheets, split-screen work and streaming; the trade is a machine that is heavier and bulkier than the 14-inch picks, and a 720p webcam that is ordinary for the price. The honest problem is the support date. Google publishes an Auto Update Expiration date for every Chromebook, but that list is keyed to model names we could not match to this exact machine, and the nearest entry belongs to a differently specified variant. We are not printing a guess: on Google's own list four variants of a single Acer model line differ by four years, so inferring a date from a similar name is not good enough. Check it yourself before buying — on the machine, under Settings, About ChromeOS, Additional details — and treat the answer as the deciding number, because it tells you how many years the price is actually buying. The 64GB of eMMC storage is fine for ChromeOS but fills faster than you expect if you keep much offline, and the Celeron N4500 is comfortably slower than the Core i3 and i5 chips in pricier machines. Choose it for memory and screen size. If a confirmed support date matters more than either, the two 14-inch picks here both have one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a Chromebook under $400 keep getting security updates?
Every Chromebook has a published Auto Update Expiration date, and it varies by hardware variant rather than by model name — four variants of one Acer Chromebook 314 line end support in four different years, from June 2029 to June 2033. Check the exact model on Google's Auto Update policy list before buying, or on the machine itself under Settings, About ChromeOS, Additional details.
What processor should I look for in a budget laptop under $400?
On Windows, a modern Ryzen 3 or 5, or a 12th-generation or newer Intel Core i3 or i5. Avoid Celeron and Pentium chips on Windows — they struggle with several browser tabs and a video call at once. On a Chromebook the same Celeron can be perfectly comfortable, because ChromeOS asks far less of the hardware.
How much RAM do I need in a budget laptop?
8GB is the working floor for Windows 11; 4GB is technically supported and practically frustrating. On a Chromebook, 4GB is usable for light browsing, though 8GB is noticeably more comfortable once you keep many tabs open.
Is 64GB of storage enough?
On a Chromebook, yes — ChromeOS is small. On a Windows laptop it is a support problem: Windows 11 occupies most of a 64GB drive, and its annual feature updates need roughly 20GB of free space to install, so the machine can end up unable to apply the updates that keep it secure. Look for 128GB or more on Windows.
Should I get a laptop or a Chromebook under $400?
A Chromebook if your work happens in a browser — documents, email, video calls, streaming — because your money buys more machine. A Windows laptop only if you need a specific Windows program with no web version. Under $400 that Windows requirement costs you real quality elsewhere.
What does Windows 11 S Mode mean on a cheap laptop?
S Mode restricts the laptop to apps from the Microsoft Store and locks browsing to Edge. Many budget Windows machines ship in it. Switching out is free and takes about a minute, but it is permanent — you cannot switch back into S Mode afterwards.

How We Analyze Products

We analyze Amazon review data — often thousands of reviews per product — to surface patterns that individual buyers miss. Our process aggregates star ratings, review counts, and buyer sentiment at scale, identifying which strengths and weaknesses appear consistently across the largest review samples available. The 6,727+ reviews analyzed on this page represent real verified-purchase feedback from Amazon buyers.

Each product earned its placement through data: total review volume, average rating, and the specific praise and complaints that repeat most often across buyers. No manufacturer paid for placement on this page. Products appear here because buyers endorsed them at scale, not because a company asked us to feature them.

We use AI to summarize review sentiment — not to fabricate opinions, but to condense what thousands of buyers actually wrote into a readable format. The pros and cons you see reflect the most common themes found in verified purchaser reviews, paraphrased for clarity. We do not claim to have accessed Reddit, YouTube, or specific publications in generating these summaries.

How We Score These Products

Dimension scores on this page come from published measurements by named independent reviewers, matched to the exact model listed — not to a similar product from the same range. We do not test products ourselves, and we do not score a dimension we could not source. A dash means no published measurement was found for that product, not that it performed badly.

Value: Price-to-performance ratio. Products with high ratings and low prices score highest.

Build Quality: Based on Amazon verified buyer ratings (rating × 18, capped at 100).

Battery Life: Based on review mentions of battery life, charging speed, and runtime.

Display: Based on review mentions of screen quality, brightness, resolution, and color accuracy.

Performance: Based on verified buyer review sentiment analysis.

Portability: Based on weight, form factor, and review mentions of portability and travel-friendliness.

Upgradeability: Based on verified buyer review sentiment analysis.

The overall score is the mean of the dimensions we could evidence for that product, on a 10-point scale. Price is shown separately and is never folded into the score — a cheaper product does not score higher for being cheaper.
