Ingredient List Priorities

Ingredients are listed by weight before cooking. The first ingredient should be a named animal protein — "chicken," "beef," "salmon," not "meat" or "poultry" (unspecified). The first five ingredients typically make up 80%+ of the formula.

Look for: Named protein meal (chicken meal, salmon meal) as the second ingredient — meals are protein-dense because water is removed. Fish meal or fish oil in the first 5 ingredients indicates DHA sourcing for brain development.

Guaranteed analysis percentages include moisture. To compare foods accurately, convert to dry matter basis: divide the nutrient % by (100 minus moisture %).
