Tools › Which Wet/Dry Vacs Are Small Enough for a Flat?
Quick Answer
The default shop vac is 9 to 16 gallons and needs a permanent corner, so it is out no matter how good it is. Every machine here is 5 gallons or smaller with the capacity in its own specification, starting with the Armor All at 2.5 gallons. The trade is runtime between emptyings and some suction on standing water.

Which Wet/Dry Vacs Are Small Enough for a Flat? Buying Guide
Every vacuum on this page is 5 gallons or smaller. That is the constraint, it is
printed on each one, and it is the thing that decides whether a shop vac is usable in a flat, a
car or a single room rather than a garage.
What the constraint rules out
The default shop vac is 9 to 16 gallons, and its size is not really about capacity — it
is about where the machine lives. A 10-gallon drum is roughly knee height, weighs over 20 pounds
empty, and needs a corner permanently. If you are working in a small space the tank you can
actually store is the tank you will actually use, so the big-drum machines that dominate this
category are out regardless of how good they are.
What you give up going small
Two things, honestly. Runtime between emptyings, which is obvious and rarely matters for the
jobs a small vac gets. And motor power: peak horsepower generally tracks drum size, so a 2.5 to 5
gallon machine will not pull standing water as fast as a 9 gallon one. For dust, spills, car
interiors and one-room cleanups, that difference is theoretical.
Gallons are not the only dimension that matters
Hose diameter decides what the machine can swallow without clogging, and a compact vac with a
narrow hose will jam on drywall offcuts that a wide-hose machine takes without noticing. Check the
hose as well as the drum if you are buying for renovation debris rather than dust.
How to read the ratings on this page
Star figures are Amazon customer ratings with the count of customers who left them. We have not
tested these machines. Capacities come from each manufacturer's own specification and are printed
here as specifications, not converted into a score.
Which one to buy
For a flat, the Armor All, AA255, 2.5 Gallon 2 Peak HP Wet/Dry Utility Vacuum is the pick here for one reason: at 2.5 gallons it has the smallest tank on this page, and tank size is what decides whether the machine lives in a cupboard or lives in the way. The Vacmaster and the Shop-Vac both double the capacity, which is the right trade only if you have somewhere to put them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 2.5 gallon vac big enough to be useful?
For car interiors, spills and single-room cleanups, yes. For a renovation that produces continuous debris you will spend real time emptying it.
Can these pick up water?
Every machine here is rated wet/dry, so yes, up to its tank capacity. A smaller tank simply means emptying sooner, and you must remove the dry filter first.
Does a smaller tank mean weaker suction?
Usually a little. Peak horsepower tends to track drum size, so a compact machine pulls standing water more slowly. For dust and dry debris the difference is hard to notice.
How We Analyze Products
We analyze Amazon review data — often thousands of reviews per product — to surface patterns
that individual buyers miss. Our process aggregates star ratings, review counts, and buyer
sentiment at scale, identifying which strengths and weaknesses appear consistently across
the largest review samples available. The 31,799+ reviews analyzed on this page represent real verified-purchase feedback from Amazon buyers.
Each product earned its placement through data: total review volume, average rating, and the
specific praise and complaints that repeat most often across buyers. No manufacturer paid for
placement on this page. Products appear here because buyers endorsed them at scale, not
because a company asked us to feature them.
We use AI to summarize review sentiment — not to fabricate opinions, but to condense what
thousands of buyers actually wrote into a readable format. The pros and cons you see reflect
the most common themes found in verified purchaser reviews, paraphrased for clarity. We do not
claim to have accessed Reddit, YouTube, or specific publications in generating these summaries.
