Tech › Best Portable External SSDs 2026: 1TB Drives Compared
Quick Answer
The Crucial X9 1TB ($169.13) is our pick: it is rated for the same 1,050MB/s reads as the Samsung T7 and costs less. Buy the T7 instead if you want password protection backed by AES 256-bit hardware encryption, which Crucial does not list for the X9.

We compared these five drives on the specifications their makers publish for these exact models and checked each Amazon listing on October 7, 2026. We did not lab-test them: the speeds below are the manufacturers' rated maximums, and the ratings and warranties are the makers' own.
| Drive | USB standard | Rated read | Water and dust | Drop rating | Hardware encryption | Warranty |
| Crucial X9 1TB | USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) | 1,050MB/s | Not rated | Up to 7.5 ft | Not listed | 3 years |
| Samsung T7 1TB | USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) | 1,050MB/s | Not rated | Up to 2 m (6.6 ft) | AES 256-bit, password | 3 years |
| SanDisk Extreme 1TB (SDSSDE61) | USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) | 1,050MB/s | IP65 | Up to 3 m | AES 256-bit, password | 5 years |
| WD My Passport SSD 1TB | USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) | 1,050MB/s | Not rated | Up to 6.5 ft (1.98 m) | AES 256-bit, password | 5 years |
| Samsung T9 1TB | USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) | 2,000MB/s | Not rated | Up to 3 m | AES 256-bit | 5 years |
Why four of these drives have the same speed
The Crucial X9, Samsung T7, SanDisk Extreme and WD My Passport SSD all use USB 3.2 Gen 2, a 10Gbps link, and each of those four is rated for reads up to 1,050MB/s. That shared ceiling is why speed does not separate them. Plugged into an older USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) port, any of them runs at roughly half that rate, so check what your computer's ports support before paying for speed.
When the Samsung T9 is worth the extra money
The Samsung T9 is the only drive here that goes past the 10Gbps ceiling: it uses USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps), and Samsung rates the 1TB model for reads up to 2,000MB/s and writes up to 1,950MB/s. That speed needs a Gen 2x2 port on the computer as well. Apple Macs do not support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, and many Windows laptops lack it too; on a 10Gbps port the T9 runs in the same speed class as the other four. It is also the heaviest drive here at 122 grams. It earns its place only if your computer has a Gen 2x2 port and you move large video or project files often.

The SanDisk Extreme "(Old Model)" and the 2023 data-loss reports
Amazon labels the SanDisk listing "(Old Model)" because SanDisk now sells the Extreme Portable SSD V3 (SDSSDE70), which is rated for up to 2,000MB/s on a Gen 2x2 port. The drive on this page is the earlier SDSSDE61-1T00-G25. In 2023, after reports of drives losing data, Western Digital (then SanDisk's parent) released a firmware update for a specific list of models: the 4TB capacity of this same Extreme Portable model, the Extreme PRO Portable in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB, and the 4TB My Passport. The 1TB Extreme on this page and the 1TB WD My Passport SSD were not on that list.
Ruggedness, encryption and warranty
The SanDisk Extreme carries our Most Rugged Pick badge because it is the only drive on this page with a water and dust rating (IP65), and its 3-meter drop rating ties the T9 for the highest here. For security, the Samsung T7, SanDisk Extreme and WD My Passport SSD all offer password protection backed by AES 256-bit hardware encryption, and the T9 lists AES 256-bit hardware encryption; Crucial lists none for the X9. The SanDisk, WD and T9 carry five-year limited warranties, against three years for the Crucial X9 and Samsung T7.

Who sells these listings
The seller on these listings can change within a single day, so check it on Amazon before you buy. On our latest check, on October 7, 2026, the Crucial X9's default seller was Amazon Germany and the WD My Passport SSD's was Amazon Japan; a logged-out check showed no delivery estimate for either. The Samsung T7 and the SanDisk Extreme were offered by third-party sellers, and the SanDisk's price was above anything we recorded for it in August and September. The lowest Samsung T9 offer was a used unit sold by Amazon Resale, which its card flags as not a new unit. The WD ranks fourth because it matches the SanDisk on speed, encryption and warranty but has no water or dust rating. The Crucial X9 1TB (CT1000X9SSD902) is a USB-C drive that Crucial rates for reads up to 1,050MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps), the same ceiling as the Samsung T7, SanDisk Extreme and WD My Passport SSD on this page. Crucial rates it shock, vibration and drop proof up to 7.5 feet, but publishes no IP water or dust rating for it and lists no hardware encryption. The warranty is three years. It is our top pick because it matches the other 10Gbps drives on rated speed for less money. Skip it if you need password-protected encryption (the Samsung T7) or protection against water and dust (the SanDisk Extreme). One thing to know before ordering: on Amazon.com this listing's default seller is Amazon Germany, and a logged-out check showed no delivery estimate for that offer.

The Samsung T7 1TB (MU-PC1T0T) is rated for reads up to 1,050MB/s and writes up to 1,000MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps). Its edge over the Crucial X9 is security: Samsung's software sets a password backed by AES 256-bit hardware encryption, which Crucial does not list for the X9. Samsung rates it to survive drops of up to 2 meters (6.6 feet). It has no IP water or dust rating, and the warranty is three years. On an older USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) port it runs at roughly half its rated speed, as every 10Gbps drive here does. Buy it over the X9 if encryption matters to you; skip it if you want a five-year warranty or water and dust protection, which the SanDisk Extreme has. If both of your computers have 10Gbps ports, the T7 and the X9 will move files at the same rated speed, so the choice comes down to whether the password lock is worth the price difference shown on the two cards.

The WD My Passport SSD 1TB (WDBAGF0010BSL-WESN) is rated for reads up to 1,050MB/s and writes up to 1,000MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2, with password-enabled 256-bit AES hardware encryption, a drop rating of up to 6.5 feet (1.98 m) and a five-year limited warranty. It has no IP water or dust rating. On paper it matches the SanDisk Extreme on speed, encryption and warranty but gives up the IP65 rating, which is why it ranks below it. Western Digital's 2023 firmware advisory covered the 4TB My Passport, not this 1TB model. Before ordering, note that on Amazon.com this listing's default seller is Amazon Japan, and the other offers come from third-party sellers. Buy it if you want encryption and a five-year warranty and do not need water resistance. Compared with the Samsung T7, it adds two more years of warranty coverage and offers the same kind of password-protected encryption at the same rated speed.

The Samsung T9 1TB (MU-PG1T0B) uses USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps), and Samsung's data sheet rates it for reads up to 2,000MB/s and writes up to 1,950MB/s, about twice the other four drives on this page. That speed needs a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port on the computer too. Apple Macs do not support Gen 2x2, and on a 10Gbps port the T9 runs in the same speed class as the Samsung T7. Samsung lists AES 256-bit hardware encryption, a 3-meter drop rating and a five-year limited warranty, but no IP rating, and at 122 grams it is the heaviest drive here. Buy it only if your computer has a Gen 2x2 port and you regularly move large video or project files; otherwise the Crucial X9 or Samsung T7 gives you the same speed on a 10Gbps port for less. Against the T7, it also lengthens the warranty from three years to five.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Crucial X9 waterproof?
No. Crucial rates the X9 as shock, vibration and drop proof up to 7.5 feet but publishes no IP water or dust rating for it. The SanDisk Extreme on this page is the only drive here with one (IP65).
Will the Samsung T9 reach 2,000MB/s on a Mac?
No. The T9 needs a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) port for its rated 2,000MB/s, and Apple Macs do not support Gen 2x2. On a Mac it runs at USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) speed, the same class as the other four drives on this page.
Was the 1TB SanDisk Extreme affected by the 2023 data-loss problem?
Not according to Western Digital's 2023 firmware advisory. It listed the 4TB Extreme Portable, the Extreme PRO Portable in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB, and the 4TB My Passport. The 1TB Extreme on this page (SDSSDE61-1T00-G25) was not on that list.
Which of these drives have hardware encryption?
The Samsung T7, SanDisk Extreme and WD My Passport SSD offer password protection backed by AES 256-bit hardware encryption, and Samsung lists AES 256-bit hardware encryption for the T9. Crucial lists no hardware encryption for the X9.
Which drive has the longest warranty?
The SanDisk Extreme, WD My Passport SSD and Samsung T9 each carry a five-year limited warranty. The Crucial X9 and Samsung T7 carry three years.
Why are most of these drives the same speed?
Four of the five use USB 3.2 Gen 2, a 10Gbps link, and are rated for reads up to 1,050MB/s. Only the Samsung T9 uses the faster USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) standard.
How We Analyze Products
We analyze Amazon review data — often thousands of reviews per product — to surface patterns
that individual buyers miss. Our process aggregates star ratings, review counts, and buyer
sentiment at scale, identifying which strengths and weaknesses appear consistently across
the largest review samples available. The 124,284+ reviews analyzed on this page represent real verified-purchase feedback from Amazon buyers.
Each product earned its placement through data: total review volume, average rating, and the
specific praise and complaints that repeat most often across buyers. No manufacturer paid for
placement on this page. Products appear here because buyers endorsed them at scale, not
because a company asked us to feature them.
We use AI to summarize review sentiment — not to fabricate opinions, but to condense what
thousands of buyers actually wrote into a readable format. The pros and cons you see reflect
the most common themes found in verified purchaser reviews, paraphrased for clarity. We do not
claim to have accessed Reddit, YouTube, or specific publications in generating these summaries.

How We Score These Products
Dimension scores on this page come from published measurements by named independent reviewers, matched to the exact model listed — not to a similar product from the same range. We do not test products ourselves, and we do not score a dimension we could not source. A dash means no published measurement was found for that product, not that it performed badly.
Speed: Based on verified buyer review sentiment analysis.
Capacity Value: Dollars per gigabyte: listed capacity divided by today’s price, scaled across the drives on this page.
The overall score is the mean of the dimensions we could evidence for that product, on a 10-point scale. Price enters one dimension only — $/GB — and no other score. Amazon star ratings are shown separately and are never part of any score.
Analysis based on manufacturer product pages and data sheets (Crucial, Samsung, SanDisk, WD), Western Digital's 2023 firmware advisory, and the Amazon listings checked on October 7, 2026.
